Myanmar fixates on Rohingya calculation

By Peter Lee

To outside observers, the carnage inflicted on the Rohingya minority - a five-month spasm of violence and de fact ethnic cleansing ostensibly stemming from the rape of a Buddhist woman by three Rohingya men - in Rakhine Province is indefensible and inexplicable.

What is even less understandable to Westerners is the virtually universal closing of ranks among local and national governments, pro and anti-government Buddhist monks, junta apologists and pro-democracy activists, President Thein Sein and Aung San Suu Kyi, all uniting to deny the apparently undeniable fact that an old fashioned pogrom is taking place against Rohingya minority and other Muslims.

Rohingya plight hurts group's credibility

The plight of the Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar is threatening to blow up in the face of the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN), just before the regional grouping convenes its 21st summit in Cambodia.
To help defuse the humanitarian fallout, ASEAN has offered to work closely with the Myanmar government and the United Nations, in the same way this tripartite arrangement effectively provided relief to the victims of Cyclone Nargis in 2008.

But Myanmar has rejected the offer on the grounds that the conflict is an internal affair, according to ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan. He said that the atrocities, if not ended, could radicalise the Rohingya Muslims and destabilise South-east Asia.
Dr Surin's warning bell is timely. There are signs of growing agitation, especially within the Muslim communities of South-east Asia, at the seeming lack of peace efforts on the part of the Myanmar government and the international community.

Letter from America: Genocide of the Rohingyas of Myanmar – Part 2 All Over Arakan It’s Bosnia Again!

Sun, 2012-11-11 01:19 — editor ။ ASIAN TRIBUNE
By Dr. Habib Siddiqui
In a meeting (in which I was invited to speak on the Rohingya problem) held in Luton (located 30  miles north of London), UK, on October 13, a British MP mentioned close parallel between what is happening today against the Rohingya Muslims in Arakan and what happened in Bosnia in the early 1990s against the Bosnian Muslims. He is right.
The Arakan state, which per estimates made by Dr. Shwe Lu Maung alias Shahnewaz Khan, in his book – The Price of Silence: Muslim-Buddhist War of Bangladesh and Myanmar – a Social Darwinist’s Analysis – had probably as many Rohingya Muslims as there were Rakhine Buddhists living in its four districts before the latest extermination campaign that began on June 3 of this year, is now almost devoid of any Muslim village that is unharmed or intact by Buddhist Rakhine terrorism.

World should support Myanmar Rohingya Muslims: Rights organization

The Refugees International organization has called on the international community to make a collective effort to end the suffering of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, Press TV reports.

Sarnata Reynolds, the program manager of the rights organization, told Press TV in an interview on Friday that the responsibility of supporting the Muslim minority in Myanmar has to be shared by the international community.

“People are fleeing prosecution and they are fleeing hunger and violence, and they are fleeing the fact that they have zero human rights that no one would protect them. So when they take boat voyages or flee away, they need to be accepted. They need to be provided with refuge,” Reynolds stated.
